MediaTek has definitely been keeping busy lately and thankfully so, since the Chinese company’s chips play a huge part in powering much of the diverse Android device realm. The company now has two new interesting offers in its deca-core lineup – the Helio X23 and X27.
While there might not be quite as exciting as the recently announced 10nm Helio X30, they do fit nicely into the existing X20 and X25 family line and will surely find a place in plenty of affordable devices in 2017.
The X23 and X27 are Tri-Cluster Deca-Core chips, based on the familiar 20nm production process. Their CPU configurations and frequencies are as follows:
MediaTek Helio X23
Core count | Core type | Clock speed |
2x | Cortex-A72 | 2.3GHz |
4x | Cortex-A53 | 1.85GHz |
4x | Cortex-A53 | 1.4GHz |
MediaTek Helio X27
Core count | Core type | Clock speed |
2x | Cortex-A72 | 2.6GHz |
4x | Cortex-A53 | 2.0GHz |
4x | Cortex-A53 | 1.6GHz |
On the GPU side, both models come with an ARM Mali-T880, clocked at 780 MHz in the X23 and 875MHz in the X27. MediaTek also claims the new pair offers around 20% overall processing improvement. But that is an admittedly vague statement to make, so, we will stick to numbers instead.
Both models support WQXGA 2560 x 1600 pixel resolutions at 60 fps and 1920 x 1080 pixels at 120 fps with 12HZ Blending layers. MediaTek has also thrown in MiraVision EnergySmart Screen power saving technology and Envelope Tracking Module that allegedly bring around 25% and 15% improved power efficiency, respectively.
The X27 and X23 offer support for 2X LPDDR3 POP 800MHz memory, or up to 4GB of RAM. Another built-in module is the Cat.6 LTE modem, rated for 500 Mbps downstream and 50 Mbps up. There is also integrated Wi-Fi ac, GPS/GLONASS/Beidu, as well as an FM receiver and Bluetooth.
In the camera department, the upgraded Imagiq ISP is the first of its kind to integrate color, mono and depth-of-field implementations into a single package. It also supports dual camera setups. Executive Vice President and Co-Chief Operating Officer at MediaTek, Jeffrey Ju commented on the release, saying:
The MediaTek Helio platform fulfills the diverse needs of device makers. Based on the success of MediaTek Helio X20 and X25, we are introducing the upgraded MediaTek Helio X23 and X27. The new SoCs support premium dual camera photography and provide best in-class performance and power consumption.
We can expect the MediaTek Helio X23 and X27 to start appearing in consumer devices next year.
