nIn a major crackdown on gambling dens in Brahmapur on the eve of Kumar Purnima, police on Saturday night arrested 95 persons following raids at various locations.
The crackdown comes in the wake of spurt in illegal activities at such gambling units in the district.
Sources said police seized over Rs 4.25 lakh cash and 25 mobile phones during the raids conducted which were conducted at several places under the jurisdiction of eight police stations in the city.
As many as 12 gamblers were arrested during a raid at Shastri Nagar by the Goshani Nuagaon police while Rs 70,000 and six mobile phones were recovered from their possession. In another raid at Shanti Nagar under the Bada Bazar police station, 11 gamblers were arrested and Rs 11,000 was seized.
Notably, over 300 persons have been arrested in the special drive against gambling in the last one month in Ganjam district. Several businessmen, contractors and students are among the arrestees.
In similar raids in Rayagada district, as many as 12 persons were arrested after police raided a gambling den at Gunupur area on Saturday night.
Reports said the cops conducted the surprise raid in Gunupur area on the basis of specific information about the illegal activity and managed to nab the gamblers.
Cash amounting to Rs 1,29,540, one car, nine motorcycles, 12 mobile phones, and other gambling articles were seized during the raid .
